About Us

Kaitlin Mulcahey M.S., CCC-SLP

Owner & Speech Language Pathologist

My name is Kaitlin Mulcahey M.S., CCC-SLP and I am a pediatric speech and language pathologist and the owner of Competent Communicators LLC. I am certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association and licensed to provide speech and language therapy in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I graduated from Loyola University Maryland with my Masters degree in Speech and Language Pathology after graduating with my undergraduate degree from The University of South Florida.

I strongly believe that each child is unique and has individual strengths and needs. I do not believe in one-size-fits-all recommendations regarding intervention and therapy for children. Though I work with children with a variety of speech and language disorders, I am particularly passionate about working with autistic children. I have completed a variety of continuing education in order to provide best-practice when working with neurodivergent children. My therapy approach is child-centered, play-based, neurodiveristy affirming therapy that focuses on the whole child. I am also passionate about incorporating families into therapy for best outcomes.

I am trained in providing therapy using the NLA (Natural Language Acquisition) framework for gestalt language processors. I am also trained in ASD from the Inside Out which is a developmental approach for working with autistic children. Additionally, I have years of experience completing AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) evaluations for pediatric clients who would benefit from use of an AAC device.

I look forward to meeting you and your child!

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Connection over compliance

I strive to improve your child's communication skills utilizing a respectful, play-based approach.

My goal is not to change your child, but to incorporate their interests and preferences into therapy. I seek to connect with your child and understand them.I firmly believe neurodiversity-affirming, play-based therapy leads to long term progress.

Client & Family Testimonials

Parent of a 3 year old Gestalt Language Processor

We love working with Kaitlin. Her child-led approach and guidance using NLA allows us to understand and work on communication in so many different ways. While everyone is focusing on “functional communication” and compliance based practices, we are working on competent communication (song, script, gestures) and allowing my child to do what he does best, play! The result is a happy little one working through speech and having fun. We are so happy to continue working with Kaitlin and recommend to anyone looking for a great SLP.

Parent of a 4 year old Gestalt Language Processor

When we were looking for a therapist for our autistic daughter, we knew how important it was to find the right fit. We wanted someone who was Neurodiversity-affirming and would see my daughter for the incredible girl she is. Kaitlin was exactly the person we were looking for and we could not be happier with how our services have been! My daughter absolutely adores her.  She is very knowledgeable about gestalt language processing and provides meaningful information and advice for us to use at home, while providing my daughter with fun, play-based sessions. Kaitlin is truly an amazing SLP!

Caregiver of a 9 year old AAC device user

An amazing SLP! When we first met Kaitlin we were transitioning from

episodic speech and OT to long term and needed to find a therapist that could help Logan make progress. Kaitlin met with him once and I think it was love at first sight. Logan took to her immediately and she to him. To see the eye contact and the focus increase on his visits was truly encouraging. Logan is autistic and non verbal. Within a few visits Kaitlin offered the option of evaluating him for an AAC device. She was able to observe and was convinced Logan had the potential to learn to communicate with the assistance of an AAC device. She worked hard for him and with him. She opened up a whole new world of communicating with him and in turn, others. We attended workshops together, so we could learn more about the program being used and how to encourage progress for Logan and everyone else he was involved with on a daily basis. Over

the years we were with Kaitlin, Logan went from minimal eye contact, to signs and gestures to now being able to express his wants and needs with his AAC device (in complete sentences) and using beginning words. Kaitlin is extraordinarily skilled in working with special needs kids. She is kind, attentive, and patient with her clients and thier families. She opened a door for Logan that has given him a better quality of life, and she did it with love. We are forever grateful! Thank you Kaitlin!!
